The department initiated its Master’s degree program in Journalism and Mass Communication in 2058 BS, followed by the introduction of a Bachelor’s degree in 2067 BS. Further expanding its academic offerings, the department began providing courses towards a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in 2074 BS.

The decision to offer postgraduate studies in Journalism and Mass Communication was made by the Tribhuvan University Academic Council in 2057 BS. Academic instruction commenced the following year. Initially lacking a dedicated building, the program operated with administrative support from the Ratna Rajya Lakshmi Campus.

The department now operates from its own state-of-the-art facility in Balkhu, featuring advanced camera equipment and other modern resources. Prof. Khanal’s leadership has been instrumental in these advancements, establishing the department as a leading center for journalism and mass communication studies.
