Kathmandu-Lhasa direct flight started after four years
December 28, Kathmandu: The direct flight between Kathmandu and Lhasa, which had been suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic, has resumed as of Thursday. The Nepali Consul General for Lhasa, Navaraj Dhakal, announced that the Kathmandu-Lhasa direct flight service recommenced on Thursday. with flights to other Chinese cities having already resumed. In this initial phase, Himalaya Airlines commenced flights to Lhasa after a hiatus of four years.
Consul General Dhakal expressed that the year 2023 has marked a significant achievement in enhancing connectivity between Nepal and China. He attributed this success to the sustained efforts of the Nepalese government, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and various stakeholders. This development is anticipated to provide substantial support to Nepal’s export and tourism promotion initiatives.
Dhakal further disclosed that, starting January 8, 2024, the frequency of the Kathmandu-Lhasa direct flight will be increased based on passenger demand. Additionally, talks are underway for flights with other airlines and the initiation of direct flights from Nepal’s Pokhara and Bhairahawa, beginning March 2024. The interruption of direct flights from Kathmandu to Lhasa by China, amid tightened international border controls due to the COVID-19 pandemic, has also been addressed.
