26 April, Kathmandu. Balkumari Khadka has been running from pillar to post for the past one and half years after doctors found out that both kidneys of her elder son, Ganesh Kumar, have stopped functioning.
As soon as he was rushed to the hospital, doctors told her that the 22-year-old man suffered from a medical condition called IgA Nephropathy, or Berger’s disease that leads to kidney failure.
The 45-year-old Balkumari, of Khandadevi-7, Ramechhap, lost her husband six years ago. He suffered a sudden cardiac arrest. Now she’s worried that her elder son too may suffer similar fate if she cannot manage Rs 500,000, a sum the patient’s family must deposit before undergoing kidney transplant at Human Organ Transplant Centre, Bhaktapur.
After her husband, Jhana Bahadur, passed away, Ganesh Kumar learned driving and started supporting the family of four, earning around Rs 25,000 a month. Before falling ill, he worked as a driver in Butwal in western Nepal.
“The donor is ready, but we don’t have the amount needed to deposit at the hospital,” Khadka, the mother of three, said fighting back her tears while travelling on a Ramechhap-Kathmandu bus on Sunday morning.
“We don’t know any powerful official or politician in Kathmandu. So we are helpless. That’s why please try and help us in whatever way you can. We must urgently collect the money so that my elder son can have a new kidney transplanted and recover,” she said.
