Kathmandu, March 19: Visiting Member of the House of Commons of the United Kingdom Virendra Sharma today paid a courtesy call on Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport Narayan Kaji Shrestha at the latter’s office in Singha Durbar. Sharma is also chairperson of the British-Nepal All-Party Parliamentary Group. On the occasion, reminding the relations between Nepal and the UK, Minister Shrestha viewed that the British Gurkhas should be treated equally as their British counterparts, said the minister’s press coordinator Kamal Giri.
He also sought ‘special’ assistances from Sharma in this regard. He also expected the British government to provide help to Nepal in the context when the country is upgrading from a least developed country, and to continue their facilities to Nepal in the days to come. Praising the country for their role on the issue of climate change, he said, “Climate change has its impacts much in the least developed and developing countries like Nepal. Nepal wishes the UK has an effective role in this regard.”
He also showed his concern about the UK-Nepal trade and UK’s assistances in Nepal’s infrastructures. In return, saying he was positive about the contributions and roles of the British Gurkhas, Sharma said the issue of equality was raising. The UK government has launched a study on the issue of disparity facilities, and it would conclude in next three months, he said pledging his help to this effect. He said he was positive about the issue for the UK to continue its assistances Nepal is entitled to following its upgradation from a least developed country.
