22nd National Earthquake Safety Day being marked today
Kathmandu, Jan 16: The 22nd National Earthquake Safety Day is being marked by organising different programs across the nation today. The day marks the anniversary of the earthquake occurred on Magh 2, 1990BS.
The Day is being marked under the slogan ‘Earthquake resilient infrastructures, basis of long-term happiness and prosperity’. Magh 2 is being observed as the National Earthquake Safety Day since 2055BS with an objective of creating public awareness about earthquake safety.
Nepal witnessed devastating earthquake on Baisakha 12, 2072BS which claimed around 9,000 people and destroyed nearly 1 million private houses and over 900 archeological heritages.
Sindhupalchowk, Dolakha, Gorkha, Ramechhap, Okhaldhunga, Sindhuli, Kavrepalanchowk, Makawanpur, Dhading, Nuwakot, Rasuwa, Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur districts suffered worst by the earthquake while 18 others got partial damages.
Four years ago, President Bidya Devi Bhandari had inaugurated the reconstruction of the quake damaged infrastructures from Ranipokhari.
The main organizing committee is holding a special programme in Bhaktapur on this Day today. Even the public-awareness rallies would be organised in Bhaktapur before the programme, said Coordinator of Publicity Sub-Committee and Director General of the Department of Urban Development and Building Construction, Maniram Gelal.
